줄기는 길고 가늘어지고 기침을하면서 나무 등을 기어 오른다.

잎은 가늘고 끝에서 번들로 모여서 3 개의 줄을 이룬다.
잎 밑면이 껍질이 벗겨진다.
꽃은 줄기 끝에 여러 꽃차례가 있고 암술대에 새싹이있다.
열대성 아시아의 폴리네시아 출신, 특히 뉴기니 출신의 세계에서 100 종이 넘습니다.
일본에서는 야에 야마 (Yaeyama) 섬과 오가사와라 (Ogasawara) 섬에 1 종류, 야에 야마 (Yaeyama)에 다른 종류가 분포한다.
둘 다 남쪽으로 분포되어있는 종의 북쪽 한계 다.
